Serbian university tuition, admissions & budget places – Lat
Entities: Department of History (Niš) · Administrative Court of Serbia · Department of Serbian Language (Niš) · Serbian government · Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš
Overview
In late May 2026 Serbian authorities announced a roughly 5 % tuition increase for self‑financing students at several public faculties, with the University of Belgrade later specifying hikes of 1 000–10 000 dinars for the 2026/27 year while some programmes kept fees unchanged. The first enrollment round opened in mid‑June, offering 9 732 budget seats at the University of Belgrade and a total of 17 493 state‑funded places nationwide. Admissions began on 21‑22 June at Belgrade and the State University of Novi Pazar and continued with examinations in Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Priština (Kosovska Mitrovica) through June. By mid‑July the University of Belgrade confirmed that 15 of its 31 faculties still had vacant budget places, leaving roughly half of its capacity unfilled. The most significant gaps were in the Faculties of Philology, Agriculture, Mining‑Geological and Geography, with competition strongest in Economics, Organizational Sciences, Medicine, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Separately, on 10 June the Serbian Administrative Court issued a temporary measure blocking the establishment of the Faculty of Serbian Studies at the University of Niš, overturning earlier approvals and reverting three departments to the Faculty of Philosophy. The academic network “Free University” in Niš warned university management that any further attempts to create the Faculty would violate the court order and could entail institutional and personal liability. On 27 July the Serbian government issued a decree eliminating all publicly funded budget places for master’s and doctoral programmes in History, Serbian language and Russian language at the University of Niš Faculty of Philosophy, and also affecting undergraduate budget allocations despite the earlier court‑ordered suspension of cuts.
