Troy Parrott secures Champions League debut winner

Overview

Following his €20 million transfer from AZ Alkmaar, Troy Parrott has successfully integrated into the Real Betis squad. Manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Parrott’s availability for the La Liga season opener against Valencia at Mestalla, noting the striker arrived with pre-season fitness already completed and describing him as a ‘powerful area player’ intended to reinforce the team's offensive structure. On August 25, Parrott made a successful La Liga debut, appearing as a substitute in the 71st minute to replace Cucho Hernandez. He played a pivotal role in securing a 1-0 away victory against Valencia; following a Valencia corner, Parrott helped initiate a counter-attack from the midfield that led to the winning goal by substitute Pablo Garcia. This result maintained a perfect start for Real Betis, placing the club second in the La Liga standings. Pellegrini has praised Parrott’s movement off the ball and ‘natural scoring instinct,’ citing these as key factors in the club's decision to sign the striker, who recorded 31 goals in all competitions last season. However, the team’s momentum has recently faltered. Manager Manuel Pellegrini described the club’s recent defensive performance as a ‘disaster’ following a 5-2 loss to Levante, a match in which Parrott missed a significant headed chance. Despite this setback, Parrott was set to make his home debut for Real Betis against Real Madrid. Parrott has since transitioned to European competition, scoring a decisive goal in his Champions League debut to secure a 3-2 comeback victory against Lille. The victory was aided by a red card for Lille's Ethan Mbappe for violent conduct. On September 17, Parrott contributed to a 1-0 La Liga victory over Getafe by providing the decisive assist for Abde Ezzalzouli just before halftime.
