South America-Mexico university & agri expo (June-July)
Entities: Nicolás Pino · Javier Milei · Sociedad Rural Argentina · Argentina · 138th Exposición Rural de Palermo
Overview
June–July 2026 linked engineering education, women in STEM, community projects and agribusiness across Chile, Argentina and Mexico. Argentina’s 138th Exposición Rural in Palermo (16‑26 July) continued to draw over one‑million visitors, showcase champion livestock, agro‑tech and cultural programs, and serve as a platform for policy dialogue.
President Javier Milei’s closing speech reiterated the aim of fully removing export retentions, while confirming no new measures would be announced at the fair. He later outlined a gradual reduction schedule for export taxes on soy, corn, wheat and barley, cutting soy from 33 % to 24 % and to 15 % by December 2028, and corn from 12 % to 8.5 % and later to 5.5 %. The administration also removed the foreign‑exchange cap, labeling it the market’s biggest theft.
Sociedad Rural Argentina president Nicolás Pino used both the opening and closing ceremonies to demand a permanent legal abolition of all retentions, citing US$215 billion paid since 2002 and recent US$6 billion cuts that have spurred investment in genetics, pastures and machinery. He highlighted the sector’s US$83 billion output and four‑million jobs, and called for greater infrastructure investment and a private‑property inviolability law projected to attract US$15 billion.
The expo featured a 10 % growth in exhibitors, with over 400 commercial stands, 4,500 animal exhibitors and 2,500 livestock specimens. City officials promoted it as an innovation hub: 70 % of Argentina’s agro‑industrial firms are based in Buenos Aires and two‑thirds of local startups operate in the Innovation Park. Valtra demonstrated new A5‑series tractors and the PTx Farm Engage digital platform, underscoring the sector’s push toward greater efficiency and digital integration.
Women‑in‑agriculture panels, green‑financing schemes with The Nature Conservancy, and the Integral Bovine Genomics Program remained key complementary initiatives throughout the fair.
