Overview

Following the August recess, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has convened the first Cabinet meeting of the new political season. The administration is prioritizing the implementation of the ‘Greece 2.0’ program and the upcoming International Thessaloniki Fair. Economic objectives remain centered on meeting IMF reform milestones through the completion of approximately 20 major infrastructure, energy, and health projects, alongside the early repayment of public debt—a move the Prime Minister characterized as a form of ‘national liberation.’

In addition to managing spatial planning regulations for tourism and renewable energy, the government is addressing economic pressures such as high inflation and rising costs for housing, fuel, and services. To mitigate these issues, an agreement has been reached with manufacturers and supermarkets to reduce prices on more than 1,500 products by up to 5%.

As part of a ten-day intensive political and administrative tour across Northern Greece, Mitsotakis has arrived in Thessaloniki to inaugurate the expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro toward Kalamaria. This project, which includes five new stations, is being highlighted as a key fulfillment of infrastructure promises.

The tour serves as a strategic effort to reconnect with voters in Northern Greece. During his time in Thessaloniki, Mitsotakis is scheduled to meet with mayors from the Xanthi regional unit, including Stratos Kontos, Mayor of Xanthi, and Giorgos Tsitiridis, Mayor of Avderes. The mayors intend to discuss critical regional needs, such as increased funding for rising operational costs, the staffing of the Municipal Police, and the restoration of infrastructure damaged during utility works. Other agenda items include the functionality of the Xanthi Hospital ICU, attracting investment, and improving railway connections.
