Greek SYRIZA resignations deepen, leadership turmoil

Entities: MyELAS · SYRIZA · Giorgos Karameros · Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) · George Karameros

Overview

The wave of SYRIZA departures that began on 13 July 2026 has continued to shrink the party’s parliamentary group. By 19 July the faction fell to single‑digit numbers, a historic low since the 2015 split, and Rena Dourou was installed as the new parliamentary leader amid internal disputes. On 20 July MP Symeon Kedikoglu formally resigned his Evia seat; Theodora Akrouti, the next candidate on the SYRIZA list, took the seat, reducing the party’s representation further. On 22 July the SYRIZA parliamentary group, together with the Freedom Movement and NIKI, announced a boycott of the annual “Restoration of Democracy” ceremony at the Presidential Mansion, sending a letter to President Konstantinos Tasoulas condemning the event’s perceived nostalgia for the 1967‑1974 junta. The SYRIZA delegation instead joined former political prisoners in a separate commemoration. The same day former party chairman Socrates Famellos formally notified Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis of his decision to leave the SYRIZA parliamentary group and sit as an independent MP, accusing the party of abandoning left‑wing values. SYRIZA’s leadership responded by accusing him of breaching party discipline. On 27 July former East Attica MP George Karameros, who had resigned a month earlier, publicly joined the progressive EL.A.S. party founded by ex‑prime minister Alexis Tsipras. He announced his resignation from SYRIZA and his registration as an ELAS member through a 47‑second social‑media video, completing the enrollment on the party’s online platform myELAS. Karameros said he was joining “not for a position but for the journey, together with many people” and is scheduled to attend an ELAS event in Serafeio to discuss local government matters. His move underscores a growing dilemma for independent former SYRIZA MPs, who may seek new political homes ahead of the upcoming elections.
