SYRIZA leadership turmoil and parliamentary decline
Overview
The wave of SYRIZA departures that began in early July 2026 has severely diminished the party’s parliamentary presence. Following the resignation of MP George Karameros and Katerina Notopoulou, and the departure of parliamentary group secretary Diōnysēs Kalamatiānós, the party faced a massive exodus. By mid-July, three more MPs—Andreas Panagiotopoulos, George Gavrilos, and George Psychogios—became independents, briefly dropping SYRIZA to fourth place in parliament.
Internal leadership disputes intensified as Rena Dourou took over as parliamentary leader. High-profile resignations included deputy spokesperson Foivos Tsiklias, who criticized the party for turning inward, and parliamentary group director George Bakis, who cited a lack of collective effort. Other members, such as Symeon Kedikoglu and Vasilis Kokkalis, resigned their seats to join the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), founded by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
By late July, the party’s parliamentary group had fallen to single digits. Amidst this turmoil, the group boycotted the annual “Restoration of Democracy” ceremony, protesting perceived nostalgia for the 1967–1974 junta. Former chairman Socrates Famellos also left to sit as an independent, accusing the party of abandoning left-wing values.
In August, the party moved to restructure. Rena Dourou, president of the SYRIZA Parliamentary Group, announced the removal of MP Nina Kasimati from the group, describing it as a ‘political and institutional decision’ due to Kasimati’s prolonged absence from party activities and lack of involvement in parliamentary oversight. Dourou also issued a deadline for Olga Gerovasili to formally resign her seat by August 24. To bolster its numbers, Dourou has issued an open call for independent MPs previously elected under the SYRIZA banner to return to the group.
