Iran academic year reopening amid conflict and dissent

Overview

The 1405–1406 academic year has commenced in Iran, with universities and primary schools transitioning to in-person instruction. While the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology maintains in-person learning as the standard, institutions are employing various formats including fully in-person, fully virtual, or hybrid models.

As the school year began on September 23, the Ministry of Education reported that over 16.5 million students attended classes across 124,000 schools. However, official data reveals a significant gap in enrollment; approximately 140,562 children were identified as being out of school during the previous academic year. Of these, about 41,000 had left the country and nearly 18,000 were unable to attend due to severe disabilities. Educational inequality remains high, particularly in Sistan and Baluchestan, Tehran, Razavi Khorasan, and Khuzestan.

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Education has launched several initiatives. To modernize the system, approximately 210,000 teachers from non-governmental schools have completed 36 hours of artificial intelligence training designed to foster critical thinking. To support the 211,000 enrolled nomadic students, authorities are expanding boarding schools and integrating technical and vocational training, with a specific focus on supporting nomadic girls.

Efforts to address the enrollment gap have seen recent progress, with the ministry successfully reintegrating approximately 48,000 students who had previously dropped out of primary education. To prevent future dropouts, the ministry is now monitoring enrollment via SMS notifications sent to families of students with registered national IDs who have not yet enrolled. This follows months of closures caused by ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, 2026.
