European electric truck rollout and production expansion
Entities: MAHLE · MAN Truck & Bus · IAA Transportation · Range Extender system · eTGX
Overview
The transition to zero‑emission freight in Europe is accelerating. CATL is rolling out fast‑swap stations, targeting its 2,000th site by 2026 and a global network of over 4,000, while its Choco‑SEB packs can be exchanged in under two minutes. The company also launched the Tectrans II battery for light commercial vehicles, capable of an 8C charge to raise a pack from 20 % to 80 % SOC in under seven minutes even at –20 °C. In Germany, GS Yuasa displayed a high‑cycle AGM battery for heavy‑duty trucks, and logistics firms Quehenberger and Geis ordered up to 350 new MAN tractors, expanding the electric share.
MAN Truck & Bus is expanding production capacity. A €1.2 billion investment will more than double its Kraków plant to about 270,000 m² by 2038, adding body‑in‑white, paint‑shop and cab‑assembly lines and new sustainable halls. The upgraded site will become MAN’s second dedicated electric‑truck factory after Munich, with full‑electric eTGL light‑duty trucks slated for series production from mid‑July 2026 and the eTGM medium‑duty model to follow later in the year.
At the IAA Transportation 2026 exhibition in Hannover, MAN presented its entire electric‑truck range – eTGL, eTGM, eTGS and eTGX – highlighting the eTGX’s claimed 570 km range and a predictive cruise‑control system that uses 3‑D mapping to optimise energy use. Mahle unveiled a 130 kW range‑extender and a 370 kW contact‑less electric motor, promising up to 80 % CO₂ reduction and urging regulators to recognise range‑extender technology as part of truck electrification.
