Mexican market swings, financing up 80%

Entities: Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC) · Grupo Financiero Base · América Móvil · Bolsa Mexicana de Valores · Femsa

Overview

The Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC) closed the week ending 11 July at 66,496.1 points, down 0.84 % for a fourth consecutive weekly loss. After a brief dip on 16 July, the market rebounded on 20 July, climbing to 66,713.83 (+0.89 %) amid optimism for technology and AI stocks, while the peso firmed to 17.40 per dollar. The rally faded on 22 July as earnings from Alphabet and Tesla sparked worries over AI‑related capital spending, sending the IPC to 66,266.01, a 1.54 % fall – the steepest decline since early June – and the peso to 17.53 per dollar. Heavy losses were recorded by Arca Continental, Gruma, Genomma Lab, Cemex and La Comer, with insurer Quálitas dropping 8.4 % after a price‑war report. The slide continued on 24 July, with the BMV slipping further to 66,262.38 points (down an additional 0.1 %). Televisa shares fell 4.37 % after its earnings release, and the same technology‑sector concerns that drove the earlier drop persisted. Trading volume remained elevated at about 179.2 million shares (≈12.7 billion pesos). European equity markets rose on the same day, buoyed by strong tech earnings such as SAP, while Latin American indices, led by Mexico, fell sharply. Financing activity on the BMV stayed robust, with 355.2 billion pesos channeled between January and June – an 80 % surge in long‑term debt placements, led by financial services (41 %), consumer goods (29 %) and energy (16 %). On 29 July the IPC dropped about 1.2 % to roughly 66,480 points, ending a three‑session rally. The sell‑off was led by Femsa, Grupo Carso‑controlled GCC, Volaris, América Móvil and Banregio, while the peso weakened to 17.46 per dollar. The decline coincided with a broader global equity weakness tied to renewed U.S.
