NASCAR tributes to Kyle Busch

Overview

Following the death of two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch on May 21 due to complications from sepsis and bacterial pneumonia, the NASCAR community has initiated several tributes to honor his career. As the scheduled celebration of life at Charlotte Motor Speedway approached, driver Ross Chastain noted that while the paddock remains in shock, various groups were providing assistance to Busch’s wife, Samantha, and their two children. On October 9, 2026, the celebration of life was held at Charlotte Motor Speedway before a crowd of more than 10,000 fans. The ceremony included emotional tributes from Samantha Busch, Kurt Busch, Joe Gibbs, Kyle Larson, and Bubba Wallace. During the event, Busch’s 11-year-old son, Brexton, performed a tribute by driving his father’s No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Brexton executed a burnout until the tires went flat, then climbed onto the vehicle to perform his father’s signature victory bow using a checkered flag provided by his sister, Lennix. In the wake of the loss, Kurt Busch spoke publicly about his brother’s rapid health deterioration, which began while Kyle was testing in a simulator. Kurt described the brothers as “carbon copies” who shared a unique connection on the racetrack. Samantha Busch has since discussed legacy plans via her podcast, ‘Certified Oversharer’. These include a proposal to establish August 18 as ‘National Kyle Busch Day’ and the creation of a ‘truck of chances’ to support financially struggling young drivers. She also reflected on a 2023 incident in Mexico where Kyle was detained at an airport for possessing a handgun and ammunition, an event that resulted in a fine and a prison sentence.
