OPEKA and Greek social security benefit distributions

Overview

The Organization of Providencial Benefits and Social Solidarity (OPEKA) manages various Greek social welfare programs, including housing allowances, disability benefits, and the Minimum Guaranteed Income. For the August 31, 2026, disbursement cycle, OPEKA distributed approximately 180.87 million euros to 570,792 beneficiaries. On September 1, OPEKA launched a digital platform for its annual income support program targeting families in mountainous and disadvantaged regions. To qualify, applicants must have resided in these areas for at least two consecutive years and have an annual family income not exceeding €4,700. Support is tiered: €600 annually for incomes up to €3,000 and €300 for incomes between €3,000.01 and €4,700. Eligibility requires at least one family member to be a citizen of Greece, an EU member state, an EEA member, or a Swiss citizen. Applications are submitted via the gov.gr portal, the OPEKA platform, or Citizens' Service Centers (KEP) until October 30, 2026. Starting September 7, 2026, OPEKA began redistributing unused vouchers for social, medical, and excursion tourism, as well as theater tickets. This redistribution occurs at KEP locations on a first-come, first-served basis for applicants who were not selected in the initial 2026 lottery. Individuals who failed to collect previously awarded vouchers by August 31, 2026, remain ineligible. For social and medical tourism, priority is determined by the original application's order of preference, whereas theater ticket eligibility does not use preference order. To claim tourism vouchers, applicants must first secure a reservation with a participating provider and enter details into the OPEKA ‘Room Reservation Entry’ application before visiting a KEP on the same day. Regarding the A21 child allowance, the OPEKA electronic platform is scheduled to close temporarily on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 18:00 to facilitate payment settlements. The fourth installment, covering July–August, is due on September 30, 2026.
