Overview
Authorities in the Punjab region continue intensive measures to combat illegal weapons and narcotics. Building on the ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign, the Punjab Police and the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) have expanded their crackdown on organized crime. Through the statewide ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ campaign, police have conducted thousands of raids, pushing total arrests related to gangster activities to over 78,000. Law enforcement has also maintained the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ anti-drug initiative, which has resulted in the arrest of nearly 80,000 drug traffickers since March 2025. Notable seizures include significant quantities of heroin, opium, and modern firearms such as AK-47s, M16s, and various pistols. Recent operations have focused heavily on dismantling cross-border smuggling modules. In Amritsar and Faridkot, police disrupted networks allegedly directed by foreign-based handlers. In Amritsar, recent raids dismantled international networks involving explosives and hand grenades, as well as modules using agricultural land near the India-Pakistan border to receive contraband via aerial drops. To counter aerial smuggling, authorities have deployed anti-drone systems such as ‘Baaj Akh’ and ‘Drone Sense D200 Pro’. In a recent operation by the Amritsar Rural Police, four illegal arms and narcotics supply networks were dismantled, leading to the arrest of seven individuals. Among those apprehended was a 22-year-old Army soldier, Yudhvir Singh, who was home on leave. Authorities recovered 14 sophisticated pistols and over 20 kg of heroin. Investigations suggest the group was in contact with a foreign-based handler who facilitated the smuggling of illegal arms via drones. In one instance, two suspects were intercepted after allegedly retrieving a drone-dropped consignment of 10 pistols; investigators noted the pair had previously handled approximately 20 to 25 weapon consignments.
