Escalating political tensions in Telangana involving BRS
Overview
Political tensions in Telangana have escalated between the ruling Congress party and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Following the denial of a BRS-organized farmers’ rally and Congress protests regarding K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s (KCR) attendance in the Assembly, confrontations intensified during the monsoon session.
During the session, 22 BRS legislators were suspended for disrupting proceedings. This followed the arrest of MLCs Tata Madhusudhan and N. Naveen Kumar Reddy for allegedly making derogatory, caste-based remarks against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar. Additionally, BRS leaders K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and T. Harish Rao faced legal action and detention following protests at the Assembly entrance, with police alleging they obstructed women officers. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered a probe, accusing KCR of instigating the disruptions.
In response, the BRS has intensified its political strategy. KTR met with party MLAs in Hyderabad to coordinate upcoming protests, including plans for a “mock Assembly” at Telangana Bhavan. A BRS delegation led by KTR also met with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla to request a review of the MLC suspensions, submitting a 13-page letter alleging an “erosion of constitutional governance.”
Further escalating the dispute, female BRS legislators, including former minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and MLA V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, have approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW). They allege they were manhandled, pulled by the hair, and humiliated by Telangana Police while being prevented from entering the State Assembly. The BRS is demanding the preservation of CCTV footage and the registration of FIRs against police officers and marshals involved in the alleged assault.
