Turkey water infrastructure and quality initiatives

Entities: Nilüfer District · Bursa Water and Sewerage Administration (BUSKİ) · Şahin Biba · Çınarcık Drinking Water System · Hasan Serçe

Overview

Since May 2026 Turkey’s water authorities have accelerated a series of infrastructure and quality projects. New groundwater wells were tendered in Bursa and inspections carried out at State Hydraulic Works facilities in Kırklareli. The 2025 BUSKİ report recorded a 19.7 % water‑loss rate across reservoirs, wells and treatment plants. Major construction milestones include the Gölecik Dam at 83 % completion, pre‑season irrigation on the Manyas plain, reinforcement works in Honaz and Bursa, and a tender for a new intake and transmission pipe in Nilüfer. After a mid‑June rupture at a Çorum hydro‑electric plant flooded rice fields, work resumed on the Koçali Dam, now targeting 2028 completion. In early July the Çınarcık Drinking Water Treatment Plant was connected, prompting scheduled cut‑offs in Bursa districts and a 24‑hour outage affecting Nilüfer, Mudanya and Karacabey. The 20‑km Kağıthane–Bahçelievler–Sefaköy tunnel opened in Istanbul, delivering up to 1.5 million m³ daily from the Melen Basin, and the foundation ceremony for the 879‑m Beylikdüzü Gürpınar Rainwater Tunnel was held on 11 July. Manisa’s water agency reported a 99 % chlorination success rate across 17 districts and launched rapid creek‑clean‑up operations. On 16 July the agency began replacing a 1.9‑km aging drinking‑water transmission line in the Karakılıçlı neighbourhood of Yunusemre; the modern line will eliminate losses and restore continuous service. In Bursa, a roughly 2‑km gravity‑driven sewage collector from Dereçavuş to Ovaakça in the Osmangazi district is under construction, valued at about 127 million lira and targeting full operation by May 2028. On 20 July Deputy Mayor Şahin Biba inspected the collector, confirming a hand‑over deadline of 21 May 2026 and operation by 19 May 2028.
