Asian automakers expand hybrid and electric SUV lineups

Overview

June 2026 saw Mazda debut premium hybrid SUVs CX‑90 and CX‑60 in Vietnam. Early July Xiaomi introduced its Sky Nomad range‑extender SUVs, the midsize N70 and flagship N90. By mid‑July Volvo launched the fully electric EX90 Black Edition in Italy and Smart released the LS9 Hyper SUV on an 800 V platform. NIU added three electric scooters, and Yijing shipped its AI‑vision‑controlled X9 flagship SUV from Chengdu, slated for Q3 delivery.

Xiaomi’s activity continued: on 23 July it officially launched the N70 and N90 EREV models, followed on 25 July by an announcement of the N90 Max and N70 Max under the new Kunlun architecture, highlighting 4.28 million km of road testing and ternary‑lithium batteries. On 27 July Xiaomi confirmed a technology launch event in Beijing on 30 July to debut the Sky Nomad N70 Max and N90 Max. At the 30 July event the company detailed the powertrain – a 1.5‑L gasoline generator from Harbin Dongan (150 hp/112 kW) paired with a 76 kWh battery and dual‑motor setups (210 kW+100 kW for N90 Max, 52‑76 kW for N70 Max). The N90 Max targets a WLTC electric range of 363‑370 km and 5.7 L/100 km fuel consumption when the battery is exhausted; the N70 Max offers 265‑380 km electric range. Xiaomi highlighted more than 60,000 km of road testing across Chinese cities and interior flexibility that can transform the cabin into a studio, café, lounge or playground. A preview of the Sky Nomad line is scheduled for the Chengdu Auto Show on 21 August.
