German volunteer recognitions July 2026
Entities: Federal Ministry of the Interior (Bundesministerium des Innern) · Delmenhorst · Bonn · Helfende Hand · Ehrenamt des Jahres
Overview
Volunteer recognitions across German states continued through July 2026. Earlier in the month, local ceremonies in Schweinfurt, Enzkreis‑Pforzheim, Pullach im Isartal, Weißenburg‑Gunzenhausen and Freising honoured long‑term volunteers, highlighted stipends, training and disaster‑response contributions.
On 23 July, federal merit orders were presented in Bavaria. Landrat Michael Koller awarded the Bundesverdienstorden to Walter Parma and Dr Friedrich Schmidt, founders of the senior‑citizen association Generationen Füreinander BGL e.V. in Berchtesgadener Land, recognising more than 12 000 volunteer hours. In a separate ceremony, Science and Arts Minister Markus Blume, on behalf of the Federal President, conferred the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande on Herbert Dettweiler of the Donau‑Ries district for five decades of work as a village chronicler, heritage caretaker, musician and conductor.
Later in July, the scope of volunteer awards widened. The city of Delmenhorst opened nominations for its annual “Ehrenamt des Jahres 2026” award, part of the “Ehrenamt verbindet” ceremony slated for 27 October, inviting all local volunteers with a special emphasis on young people and a judgement by an independent jury. Simultaneously, the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced the “Helfende Hand” prize, administered by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, to honour outstanding civil‑protection volunteers, encourage youth recruitment, innovative concepts and broader public appreciation for the more than 1.7 million volunteers in Germany’s population‑protection system.
