Sporting director Ole Book confirmed a fresh round of negotiations and that Dortmund officials would travel to Belgium – rather than Japan – to press the offer. The club also seeks to complete a second signing, Said El Mala.

On 25 July 2026 Dortmund intensified talks, presenting a €30 million bid plus a €5 million bonus. Karetsas reportedly gave consent, but Genk, whose contract runs to 2029, remains firm and can retain the player for another season if terms are not met. AC Milan retains interest, and Turkish side Galatasaray has entered the race, citing a €35 million fee. Negotiations continue as the transfer window narrows.
