Global student environmental and sustainability initiatives

Overview

Educational institutions across Europe and Latin America continue to implement initiatives to promote environmental awareness, biodiversity studies, and sustainability.

In Europe, the ‘Turtle’s Dream’ e-Twinning project has engaged students from IES Miguel Hernández in Spain, Liceo Español Cervantes in Italy, and École-Collège-Licée Sainte Catherine in France. This multidisciplinary project utilizes digital tools and project-based learning to simulate turtle hatching and study marine biodiversity. In Ávila, Spain, students at CEIP Comuneros de Castilla have expanded technological engagement through a robotics project titled ‘Flood Prevention in the Digital Age.’ Inspired by the DANA event in Valencia, students use LEGO Spike Essential kits and Scratch programming to develop interactive rain gauges and automated floodgate prototypes.

In Latin America, efforts focus on resource management and circular economy practices. In Chile, a partnership between the Association of Municipalities of the Llanquihue Province and the Patio Vivo Foundation integrates composting, organic waste valorization, and waste management into local school curricula. In Argentina, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba’s ‘Relatos del Ambiente’ initiative encourages students to document regional environmental issues. Additionally, in Santa Fe, the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Education have launched a pedagogical program treating water as a common good and human right, training students to understand water availability and the risks of extreme weather events like droughts and floods.

In Mexico, student federations continue preparing for the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change Mexico 2026 by presenting circular economy projects such as ‘Ecothrift’ at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
