SEGA Crazy Taxi: World Tour development
Overview
SEGA has provided further details regarding its upcoming open-world multiplayer title, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, during Gamescom 2026. The game, slated for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, will feature a global campaign. Germany has been confirmed as the first international location, featuring environments such as the Autobahn, historical villages, castles, and landmarks like a gothic cathedral and an airport. The map will also include branded shops such as Puma and Zwilling.
A playable demo showcased at Gamescom highlighted a solo mode called ‘Crazy Rush’ and secondary ‘Odd Jobs’ missions. Gameplay mechanics include maneuvers such as ‘Crazy Dash’, ‘Crazy Stop’, and ‘Crazy Drift’. While the core objective of transporting passengers remains, critics have noted changes to the control scheme, where traditional gear shifting has been replaced by standardized driving controls and signature tricks are now mapped to dedicated button presses.
Multiplayer developments include ‘Pickup Race’, where up to six players compete for passengers, and a team-based ‘Police against Taxi’ mode. The roster of returning characters includes Axel, Gena, B. D. Joe, and Gus, set to a soundtrack featuring Bad Religion and The Offspring. A closed network test for multiplayer is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026, with registration closing on August 31.
Marking the series’ 27th anniversary, this title represents the first new entry in the franchise in many years. The game introduces a dynamic day-night cycle, which players can adjust via a menu. While the art style moves away from the highly stylized look of the original toward a more realistic aesthetic, the high-energy atmosphere remains central to the experience.
