Vietnam Long Thanh Airport development

Entities: Long Thanh International Airport · Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) · Airport Corporation of Vietnam · Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien metro line · Long Thanh Airport

Overview

Vietnam continues to advance the Long Thanh International Airport project, targeting full commercial operation in December 2026. By early August, terminal construction was about 80 % complete, with walls, finishes, waterproofing, interior fittings and landscaping finished and key technical systems such as baggage‑handling, air‑bridge and fire‑protection largely installed. The Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) plans a three‑month trial‑run of airport operations from September to November 2026, while the Vietnam Aviation Administration (VATM) tests and calibrates navigation, surveillance and control systems. The final phase will complete electrical connections, integrate control systems and conduct safety checks before the operating licence is issued.

The airport has attracted interest from major foreign carriers. A delegation from All Nippon Airways visited in early August to inspect runway 23L and the passenger terminal, signalling strong interest in future services. Korean Air also toured the site in July, evaluating passenger and cargo routes between Incheon and Long Thanh and considering additional connections to Vietnamese cities such as Quy Nhơn, Huế and Đà Lạt. The phased development plan will shift international flights from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh, prioritising cargo in the first phase and completing the transition by late 2027, positioning the new hub as a regional logistics centre.

In August, ACV announced a workforce reduction of more than 2,300 employees, bringing total staff to roughly 8,500 and cutting personnel costs by about 1.9 trillion VND. Despite the downsizing, the corporation reported a profit of nearly 6,700 trillion VND for the first half of 2026 and confirmed that the airport remains on schedule, with the trial run still set for September and commercial operations expected in December. Over 250 new hires have been made for safety, ground‑handling and technical roles, while an additional 1,500‑2,000 workers are still needed for terminal completion and internal‑airport road works.
