Alghero municipal administration and political tensions

The municipal administration of Alghero launched the ‘Amici degli Animali’ (Friends of Animals) desk to support dog and cat welfare. This initiative provides citizens with assistance regarding vaccinations, microchipping, registration, and legal requirements, while also aiming to improve public hygiene and civic awareness.

Following this, the administration has faced political challenges. Internal disputes have emerged within the Democratic Party, with the delegate for Culture, Innovation, and Digital Transition, Raffaella Sanna, reporting verbal aggression and improper interference by colleague Enrico Daga to the Mayor. Fratelli d'Italia (FdI) has also criticized municipal spending, specifically targeting a €30,000 annual consultancy for animal welfare, labeling it an “unacceptable waste of public funds.”

Tensions have escalated following formal allegations by Sanna, who reported behaviors to the mayor and the municipal secretary general that she characterizes as “aggression, insults, mistreatment, and political mobbing.” Opposition groups—including Forza Italia, UDC, Lega, and Fratelli d’Italia—have stated that if confirmed, the situation would represent a “serious case of political and personal bullying that cannot be tolerated in a democratic municipality,” calling for a formal investigation.

In response to the dispute, Sanna issued a letter to the mayor and secretary general addressing the interference and insults regarding her professional relationship with Daga, who has publicly rejected the accusations. Sanna stated she will not back down, calling for “seriousness, dignity, and not slogans” in the administration.

As the crisis develops, Enrico Daga has dismissed the accusations as “banal internal political dynamics” and normal political dialectic. However, opposition leaders have criticized this minimization, demanding the Mayor take decisive action regarding Daga’s position. Gabriella Esposito, head of the Democratic Party in Alghero, has called for full transparency, requesting that both Sanna’s formal letter and the controversial chat logs be made public to allow for an objective assessment of the facts.
