Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 launch and user feedback

Overview

Following the ‘Surprise and Shine’ keynote on September 9, 2026, Apple detailed the capabilities of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Both models utilize new S11 and S12 chips and run watchOS 27. The hardware features a redesigned Health Sensing System with larger, more efficient LEDs and expanded electrode surface areas to improve biometric accuracy. Key health enhancements include heart rate measurements taken every five seconds and a 24-fold increase in heart rate variability (HRV) sampling, which powers a new ‘Readiness score’.

Technical specifications for the Series 12 include the S11 chipset based on the A20 Pro architecture. The device is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes in aluminum, titanium, and ceramic, with a reinforced Ceramic Shield front glass reported to be 60% tougher than previous models. The larger 46mm variant offers a peak brightness of 2000 nits. While the Series 12 offers a lighter design, the Ultra 4 maintains a rugged 49-millimeter titanium build with enhanced brightness of up to 3000 nits, thinner bezels providing 5 percent more screen surface, and improved battery life of up to 50 hours.

New software updates have introduced gesture-based functionalities and automatic music recognition via Shazam. However, technical and repairability challenges persist; iFixit teardowns confirmed both models received a repairability score of 4/10. Additionally, users have reported skin irritation, including redness and burning sensations under the sensors. Apple has advised users to ensure the device and band are clean and dry. Following the launch, technical stability issues emerged, with users reporting unexpected reboots and system crashes. Apple addressed these stability concerns by releasing watchOS 27.0.1.
