MLA Ian Paton stated that police requested to interview him regarding claims that he was offered a two-year advisory position with an MLA-equivalent salary in exchange for resigning his seat. Paton alleges the offer was made by Chris Delaney, chief of staff to Findlay, to facilitate Findlay’s entry into a byelection. Paton has since noted that negotiating benefits for a legislative resignation is illegal under the Criminal Code. Findlay has denied the allegations, describing them as “preposterous.” The RCMP has acknowledged awareness of a purported recording related to this matter.

These developments coincide with preparations for the Abbotsford-Mission byelection on September 26, called by Premier David Eby following the resignation of Reann Gasper. Confirmed candidates include Findlay for the Conservatives, Pam Alexisin for the NDP, and Lakhwinder Jhaj for CentreBC. Noting the “significant chaos” within the Conservative caucus, Premier Eby has declined to rule out calling a snap election.
