DreamWorks Animation Forgotten Island release

Overview

DreamWorks Animation is releasing ‘Forgotten Island’, an original animated film directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado that draws inspiration from Filipino mythology and folklore. The story follows childhood best friends, Jo and Raissa, who are transported via a mysterious portal to the mystical island of Nakali. Set initially in the Philippines during the 1990s, the plot explores how the protagonists' paths diverge as they grow older. As they navigate creatures such as the ‘Dreaded Manananggal’, ‘Aswang’, ‘Duwende’, ‘Kapre’, and ‘Tiyanak’, they must find a way home before losing their memories of one another. The film incorporates various cultural elements, including traditional tinikling dancing, lechon, and karaoke. To evoke a nostalgic, anarchic cartoon sensibility, the production employs a patchwork of mixed media, including 2D animation, cutout-styled sequences, and live-action clips. It features diverse animation styles, including 2-D anime and manga influences and 2D sequences by Manila-based Snipple Animation, alongside visual styles inspired by 1990s digital camera techniques.

The voice cast includes H. E. R. as Jo, Liza Soberano as Raissa, Lea Salonga as the Manananggal, Dave Franco as Raww, Jenny Slate as Batiba, and Manny Jacinto as Bungi. Other cast members include Jo Koy, Dolly de Leon, and Ronny Chieng. Following its theatrical debut on September 23, 2026, the film received strong critical acclaim, earning a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an ‘A’ CinemaScore, though it faced commercial challenges with an opening weekend of $12.8 million against an $80 million budget. The narrative specifically examines how memories shape identity and features a struggle against the villain Batiba, who seeks to steal memories. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has scheduled a digital release for October 27, 2026, with a physical media release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD set for December 1, 2026.
