Iranian law enforcement crime crackdowns
Overview
Law enforcement agencies in Iran continue to conduct operations targeting diverse criminal activities across multiple provinces. In Tehran, police have dismantled several high-value theft rings, including a professional car theft ring and a gang responsible for a 40 billion toman residential robbery. Recent actions in the capital also include the arrest of a serial fraudster who used online marketplaces to scam citizens with fake advertisements for household appliances. Colonel Mehdi Memarpour, commander of the Tehran Metropolitan Police Station 1, noted the suspect used false addresses to evade tracking and was wanted for similar crimes in East Azerbaijan, Kerman, and Zanjan. In a recent development in Tehran, police arrested suspects involved in the kidnapping of a young businessman for extortion. The incident began on August 11 near Pounak Square, when two individuals posing as security officers abducted the victim in a Dena vehicle. The victim was held captive for approximately 10 days in Golestan Town, where he was kept blindfolded and tied to a chair. The kidnappers demanded 30 billion Iranian tomans in cash for his release. Investigations revealed the two primary suspects were hired by a third individual with prior financial dealings with the businessman. Following a report from the family, police tracked the suspects to their hideout, leading to their arrest and the safe release of the victim. Recent operations have also focused on jewelry theft. In Hamidiyeh, a specialized task force arrested two armed individuals following a series of residential burglaries targeting jewelry. In southern Tehran, officers from the 152 Khanabad station apprehended a motorcyclist accused of multiple gold chain thefts from women; the suspect was identified by several victims, and stolen goods were recovered. Regional operations have expanded to include various offenses. In Anzali, a 49-year-old was arrested for financial crimes involving a 100 billion toman debt.
