University outreach expands in Argentina, Chile and Ecuador

Overview

Since late June, universities in Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador have expanded public-facing programmes, including language classes, workshops, and arts exhibitions. Early initiatives included the Faculty of Engineering of Olavarría’s nine extension projects in Argentina and the University of Cuenca’s workshops in Ecuador.

In August 2026, regional outreach intensified. In Chile, the JAYMA alliance between the Universidad de Tarapacá and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile began working with the Arica y Parinacota regional government to link humanities and social-science research to public-sector needs and address rural depopulation. Additionally, the Universidad de Atacama inaugurated a territorial deployment in Chañaral under the Fondo de Investigación Universitaria Territorial (FIUT), a program intended to cover all nine communes of the Atacama region. During the Chañaral launch, researchers and officials discussed local challenges regarding public health, environmental care, and water contamination.

In Argentina, the Universidad Nacional de Catamarca implemented the “Aula Amable” programme to foster inclusive school environments and socio-emotional skills. Meanwhile, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) Faculty of Agronomy launched an environmental training project in General Alvarado. In collaboration with the Félix de Azara Natural History Foundation and the local municipality, UBA researchers began surveying sites like the Centinela del Mar Natural Reserve to study paleontological heritage, coastal ecosystems, and land use.
