Vietnam implements 2026-2027 academic reforms and logistics
Overview
Vietnam has officially commenced the 2026-2027 academic year, marked by nationwide opening ceremonies involving approximately 27 million students and teachers. A central ceremony was held at the Muong Khuong Boarding School in Lao Cai province, attended by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng. The Prime Minister emphasized that this year marks a breakthrough period for educational quality following the 14th Party Congress, urging the sector to pursue “substantive reform within every classroom” and prioritize qualitative breakthroughs, practical skills, and modernized digital management systems.
A major theme of this academic year is a significant administrative reorganization aimed at optimizing resources. This includes school mergers and network restructuring, such as in Hanoi, where the public education system was reorganized to 1,093 units, and in Can Tho, where secondary and high schools were merged. In Ha Tinh province, authorities are implementing similar restructuring measures, including the reassignment of 14 high school principals.
To support infrastructure, the Ministry of Education and Training has been accelerating the completion of 108 inter-level boarding schools across 19 provinces. While provinces like An Giang have reached 100% completion, others such as Gia Lai have faced delays due to heavy rains and labor shortages. In Quảng Ngãi, authorities are preparing to inaugurate four boarding schools in border communes for the new term.
Further administrative shifts are underway via Decision No. 3013/QD-BGDDT. Minister Hoang Minh Son outlined a plan to reorganize public service units, with higher education reorganization proposals due to the Prime Minister before April 1, 2027. Key vocational and pedagogical mergers include integrating the Central Pedagogical College into the Hanoi National University of Education and the Central Pedagogical College - Nha Trang into Nha Trang University. The Ministry aims to streamline operations and enhance autonomy without disrupting student or staff rights.
