Dominican Republic social, tourism and economic initiatives

The Dominican Republic is implementing various social, educational, and infrastructure initiatives. Social development efforts include meetings between the agency Supérate and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean to improve labor inclusion and social protection. Additionally, the Ministry of Justice and the National Council of Private Enterprise (CONEP) are collaborating to integrate the business sector into the National Human Rights System.

Educational support is being provided through the inauguration of a new covered sports center at the Santo Cura de Ars Educational Center by President Luis Abinader and the National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI), benefiting over 1,500 students. Community-led drives to distribute free school supplies are also active both within the country—including Villa Mella and La Vega—and among the diaspora in New York City boroughs such as Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

In the tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism and RD-Vial have launched a National Tourism Road Signage Plan to modernize road markings and standardize orientation. The first phase of this initiative targets provinces including La Altagracia, El Seibo, Samaná, Puerto Plata, Pedernales, María Trinidad Sánchez, and Santiago. To assist international travelers, RD Vial has implemented an English-language assistance line via the 511 number.

Economic indicators show significant growth, with ProDominicana reporting that exports reached a record US$9,277 million between January and July 2026, a 12.5% year-on-year increase driven by raw gold, tobacco, and orthopedic devices. Furthermore, Santo Domingo is capturing an increasing share of national tourism, now receiving 13% of all visitors, up from 8% three years ago.

Recent meteorological reports indicate extreme heat across the country, with temperatures reaching 40.2°C in Jimaní, a condition exacerbated by Saharan dust. Indomet has advised the population to take precautions against these high temperatures and potential brief rains in certain provinces.
