Iran pension delays spark protests

Overview

In late May 2024 Iran’s Social Insurance Organization announced new pension wage orders for mid‑June, prompting retirees to demonstrate against a two‑month delay and soaring inflation. By late June most June payments were processed, though banking disruptions slowed some transfers. On 7 July 2024 coordinated marches swept Shush, Ahvaz, Dezful, Kermanshah, Tehran, Isfahan and Rasht, with demonstrators demanding higher pensions, better medical insurance, price controls on food and medicine, and broader labour rights. A year later, on 20‑21 Tir (early July 2025) similar protests erupted across the country. Retirees and workers in Isfahan, Tehran, Ahvaz and other cities called for pension adjustments that keep pace with inflation, free medical care and relief from worsening economic hardship. In July 2026 the issue moved into parliament. Deputy Ali Jafari Azar, vice‑chair of the Social Affairs Commission, reiterated that unpaid pension arrears from April and May would be paid together with the June pension and, if that payment failed, the arrears would be settled no later than the August disbursement. He confirmed the agreed 30 % adjustment, aiming to raise pension levels to about 90 % of workers’ wages, and noted that extra benefits such as housing, child or marriage allowances could not be provided because the Social Security Organization lacks resources and legal authority. Ongoing meetings with the Labour, Cooperation and Social Welfare Minister were reported, and parliament pledged continued oversight. Later July‑2024 “Sunday protests” resurfaced in Shush, Ahvaz and Tehran, with retirees chanting against inflation, low wages and war‑related hardship, demanding price stability for essentials, free education and healthcare, the right to strike and an end to activist arrests.
