Poland ZUS child benefits and Dobry Start updates
Overview
ZUS continues to urge families to submit electronic applications for the 800 Plus child benefit before the 30 June 2026 deadline. From 1 July 2026, the agency opened enrolment for the Dobry Start programme, a one-off 300 zł grant for school supplies for children up to age 20 (up to 24 for those with recognized disabilities). Applications are filed via the mZUS app, the eZUS portal, Emp@tia, or internet banking until 30 November 2026.
By early September 2026, ZUS reported processing over 2.9 million applications, covering approximately 4.3 million children with total payouts exceeding 1.1 billion zł. Despite this, the 300 zł benefit is increasingly viewed as insufficient due to inflation, as the amount has not been indexed since 2018. While some political figures have proposed increasing the benefit to 800 zł, the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy confirmed there are currently no active works to increase the amount.
Research indicates that 40 percent of parents plan to spend more than they did last year, with average costs for one child estimated at approximately 623 zł—roughly 17 percent of the minimum monthly net wage. To mitigate these costs, many families are seeking discounts from retailers like Auchan.
Increased shopping activity has prompted police to issue warnings regarding cybercrime, specifically fake online stores using high-pressure tactics to steal data. Additionally, health officials have noted concerns regarding student backpack weights, observing that while most students remain within the recommended 10–15 percent of body weight limit, some still carry excessive loads.
