Turkey‑Israel diplomatic clash escalates
Overview
The diplomatic standoff that began in late June 2024 resurfaced in July 2026. Netanyahu warned Erdogan over calls for Israel’s destruction, while Turkish officials called Israel a “humanitarian burden” after Israel recognised the 1915 Armenian genocide and demanded sanctions. Erdogan, speaking with Pakistan’s prime minister, condemned Israel’s Gaza assaults and pledged $5 billion in Turkish‑Pakistani trade in energy, transport and defence. A Turkish court detained comedian Deniz Goktaş for alleged insults to the president, highlighting a domestic crackdown. On 7 July, diaspora minister Amichai Chikli circulated an AI‑generated image likening Erdogan to Hitler, prompting Netanyahu to denounce Erdogan’s rhetoric and warn the United States against supplying Turkey with F‑35 jets. Turkey accused Israel of a systematic disinformation campaign. Israeli media noted Turkey’s 355,000‑strong army, expanding defence industry, Netanyahu’s waning support, and his call with U.S. President Donald Trump condemning Erdogan’s statements. On 10 July, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called Netanyahu’s policies a regional security burden, urged pressure on Israel for humanitarian aid, and referenced S‑400 negotiations that could be re‑exported to the UAE. He cited a security framework with Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia and reiterated Turkey’s intent to resolve its pending F‑35 dispute with the United States. Analysts, including Michael Milshtein, argue Netanyahu’s intensified anti‑Turkey messaging serves personal political aims and risks harming Israel’s regional standing and the costly F‑35 deal. Iran’s foreign ministry rebuked Fidan’s analogy that Iran’s policy mirrors Israel’s, warning such comparisons could be exploited by Israeli interests, underscoring the widening diplomatic reverberations of the Turkey‑Israel clash. On 15 July 2026, Turkey’s 11th High Criminal Court in Istanbul issued an Interpol red notice for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of crimes against humanity, genocide and other war‑related offenses linked to Israel’s seizure of the Sumud humanitarian flotilla in October 2025.
