Punjab political rivalry ahead of 2026 election
Entities: Punjab (state) · Nayab Singh Saini · Excise Inspector recruitment exam · Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) · Haryana (state)
Overview
The rivalry between AAP and the BJP in Punjab has intensified since early May, when former AAP MP Sandeep Pathak and several Rajya Sabha members defected to the BJP and CM Bhagwant Mann’s outreach to Europe and Finland was matched by Haryana CM Naib (Nayab) Singh Saini’s attacks on the Punjab government. Mann responded by seeking special‑category status and a border‑development package, while AAP announced a possible early poll in November 2026 and reaffirmed Mann as its chief‑ministerial candidate. Saini has continued to contrast Haryana’s governance with Punjab’s. After a rally in Shri Muktsar Sahib on 24 June, he highlighted Haryana’s Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi scheme and criticised Punjab’s unmet women’s allowance. He then approved ₹340 crore of infrastructure projects and launched natural‑farming committees on 7 July, and at the Mango Mela in Pinjore on 10 July pledged to export Haryana mangoes globally. On 12 July he inaugurated a statewide cleanliness drive, planted saplings, and unveiled a QR‑code track‑and‑trace system for liquor, presenting these moves as proof of Haryana’s proactive administration ahead of the prime minister’s visit on 17 July. On 18 July, Saini expanded his agenda with a statewide anti‑drug campaign. At a ceremony in Karnal titled “Ek Police, Ek Sankalp – Drug‑Free Haryana”, he announced task forces at state, district, block and village levels involving roughly 600 SHOs and officials from health, education, social‑welfare and youth sectors. The plan allocates an additional ₹10 crore for enforcement, introduces software to monitor dual‑purpose medicines, and offers rewards for police achieving drug‑free zones. New de‑addiction and rehabilitation centres will be set up in every district, and medical officers will be deputed to support police and families.
