Egypt export push contends with widening current‑account gap

Entities: Mohamed Farid Saleh · Mahalla · Hussein Issa · Egypt · Gharbia Governorate

Overview

Egypt’s export momentum continued into July 2026 as the government combined sector‑specific pushes with broader reforms. Garment exports rose 15 % and a €35 million cement‑export project was launched, while digital customs and modernised clearance aimed to cut costs and speed trade. The Central Bank reported the current‑account deficit more than doubled in Q1 to $5.1 billion, expanding the nine‑month shortfall to $14.6 billion despite higher remittances, tourism and Suez Canal revenues. The Export Development Fund, led by Hatem El‑Nawawi, mapped a strategy for value‑added food exports to Europe and Africa, and Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid met Procter &  Gamble to expand local manufacturing for Gulf and African markets, stressing free‑trade agreements and quality FDI. Industry Minister Khaled Hashem inspected four factories in Ismailia’s second industrial zone on 26 July, covering frozen‑food processing, power‑generation units, ready‑made garments and a transformer plant, underscoring food and garments as export pillars.

The following day Deputy Prime Minister Hussein Issa visited Gharbia, promoting an upgrade of the Mahalla textile complex that accounts for 40 % of sector investment, aiming to boost capacity, modernise technology and sharpen export competitiveness.

Meanwhile, Egypt announced EGP 215.5 billion of green public investment for FY 2024/25—71.5 % in transport and 87 % in climate‑mitigation projects—and set a target for green spending of 60 % of total budgets by FY 2026/27. The country attracted $15.5 billion in FDI, staying first in Africa for four years, aided by a unified digital business‑registration platform and priority‑sector reforms in renewable energy, ICT, tourism and manufacturing.
