Vietnam police continue recovering mistaken transfers

Overview

Vietnamese police have been working with banks nationwide to locate senders, verify erroneous electronic transfers and arrange refunds. Starting in mid‑June, officers in provinces such as An Giang, Rạch Giá, Điện Biên, Phú Thọ, Hưng Yên and Ninh Bình helped citizens recover transfers ranging from a few million dong to nearly 500 million VND. Subsequent cases in late June and early July extended the effort to larger sums – a 500 million VND transfer in Xuân Lũng, a 190 million VND recovery in Thanh Hóa and a 2.06 billion VND restitution in Ninh Bình. The pattern continued through July, with recoveries of 1.4 billion VND in Ninh Bình, 92.6 million VND for a Korean resident in Hanoi, 14 million VND in Thái Nguyên, 30 million VND by a 14‑year‑old student, and 50 million VND in Đắk Lắk.

In early August, authorities in Hung Yên warned of a phone‑scam impersonation while police in Quảng Trị facilitated the return of a 5 billion VND mistaken transfer. On 6 August, Quảng Trị officers coordinated with the sender and recipient, verified the transaction and arranged for the full amount to be returned at a police station within two days. In mid-August, police in Gia Lai province assisted Nguyen Thi My Ny in recovering 25.1 million VND within 24 hours. Additionally, in Hung Yen province, the Trieu Viet Vuong Commune Police helped Nguyen Thi Xuyen recover 130 million VND.

Further mid-August reports show police in Hung Yen coordinating the return of 10.17 million VND sent from Ca Mau due to a typing error, and assisting a construction materials company in recovering 205.6 million VND in Tra Giang. In Can Tho City, authorities helped return 107 million VND from an unknown source to a sender in Dong Nai province.
