Lexus expands EV/hybrid line, updates ES and LS models

Overview

Lexus has aggressively expanded its electrified lineup, centered on the eighth-generation ES sedan. Launched in mid-2026, the new ES utilizes a modified Toyota/Lexus GA-K platform designed to accommodate both all-electric configurations and petrol-hybrid engines. The eighth-generation model features an increased footprint, with a wheelbase stretched by 80mm and greater overall length, height, and width. High-end trims, such as the Executive VIP, focus on rear-seat luxury through features like massage functions and legrest ottomans, utilizing a minimalist interior with materials like bamboo and semi-aniline leather.

In South Korea, Lexus has commenced pre-orders for the ES, with an official release scheduled for October 13. The local lineup includes nine configurations: four hybrid (HEV) trims and five battery electric vehicle (BEV) trims. The BEV options include the front-wheel-drive ES 350e, offering a 478km range, and the all-wheel-drive ES 500e utilizing the DIRECT4 drive system. Pricing for the BEV lineup starts at 71.6 million KRW, while the hybrid lineup starts at 72.9 million KRW. To support sales, the ‘Amazing Switch’ financial program will guarantee a residual value of 50% to 60% after three years.

While the ES expands, the 2026 Lexus IS has received mixed safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Although it earned flawless marks for collision avoidance technology, it received a “marginal” rating in the moderate overlap front crash test and for certain side impact structural components, preventing it from achieving a Top Safety Pick accolade.

In Japan, the 2027 Lexus LS flagship sedan has been introduced, focusing on enhanced driving dynamics. The Japanese LS lineup will exclusively offer the LS500h hybrid model, effectively discontinuing the pure gasoline V6 variant. The brand is also transitioning its NX midsize SUV lineup toward exclusively hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
