UP political rivalry involving Samajwadi Party

Overview

Political tensions in Uttar Pradesh have intensified as government ministers and allies launch verbal attacks against Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav. Minister OP Rajbhar has repeatedly criticized Yadav, mocking his 2027 election prospects and advising him to focus on managing his ‘I-N-D-I alliance’ and internal party issues. Rajbhar dismissed the possibility of an SP victory, mockingly suggesting Yadav should prepare for a government in his ‘next life’ rather than 2027. He further challenged Yadav to prove his sincerity by promising to appoint a Muslim Deputy Chief Minister if the party returns to power, while also questioning the party’s past record on communal riots and law and order. Minister Narendra Kashyap has also labeled Yadav ‘arrogant and selfish,’ predicting significant losses in the 2027 assembly elections and suggesting that Enforcement Directorate investigations into Jauhar University would reveal irregularities from the SP’s previous tenure. Minister Jaiveer Singh has joined these criticisms, asserting that the public will not grant the SP a mandate as long as the memory of Yadav’s 2012–2017 tenure remains. Singh characterized that period as a time when the state became a ‘danga pradesh’ (riot state) and contrasted the current government’s ‘One District One Product’ initiative with what he described as a ‘one district one mafia’ situation under the SP administration. Singh also defended the government against allegations of canceling a rally in Bulandshahr and stated that investigations into Haj Committee land irregularities are being conducted independently. In response, Akhilesh Yadav has shifted focus toward grassroots issues. In Saharanpur, he addressed sugarcane farmers, promising that an SP government would ensure payments are transferred directly to farmers' bank accounts within 24 to 48 hours of sale, while criticizing current ethanol production and sugar price policies.
