Turkish university AI expansion

Entities: Roketsan · AI Builders Turkey · ASSİM Technology Centre · Meta Platforms · Yıldız Teknik University

Overview

In early July 2026 Turkey’s higher‑education council (YÖK) announced 16 new AI‑focused university programmes for the next academic year, sparking a rapid rollout of AI education, research centres and career‑guidance events across campuses such as Özyeğin, Konya Technical and Fatih Sultan Mehmet universities.

Later that month Meta partnered with Yıldız Teknik University to launch the AI Builders Turkey competency programme, training over 500 developers, students and entrepreneurs on Turkish‑language models and AI tools, and culminating in two hackathons scheduled for August.

By early August, universities were accelerating the transition of AI and design graduates into the workforce. Students in AI engineering tracks began internships and employment with defence and technology firms including ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, TUSAŞ and Roketsan, while YÖK introduced measures to align curricula with the country’s digital‑transformation goals. Professors highlighted AI engineering’s role in systematising production and industrial processes. Simultaneously, design graduates were being steered toward the booming global creative economy, with demand for expertise in sustainable building, neuro‑architecture and UX driving new career pathways.

These developments illustrate a coordinated push to embed AI and related design skills throughout Turkey’s higher‑education system and directly channel talent into strategic industry sectors.
