Turkey's summer cultural festivals continue nationwide
Overview
The municipal-driven cultural wave that began in early July has expanded across Turkey through August. In late June, Denizli opened the 6th International Cartoon Competition exhibition, drawing artists from 41 countries. Early July saw folk-dance programmes in Bafra and the 20th International Folk Dance Festival in Denizli, while Samsun hosted the 36th International Folk Dance Festival. Mid-month, large local festivals attracted thousands, including Istanbul’s Küçükçekmece Classic Car Festival, Samsun’s Kavak Çakallı Menemen Festival, Bursa’s gastronomy celebration, and Malatya’s inaugural Kuluncak Culture Festival. The Konya Culture Road Festival concluded on 27 July, before moving to Nevşehir from 1–9 August. In the Black Sea region, cultural traditions were emphasized through community gatherings. In Gümüşhane, the Tataroğulları family held its second annual reunion to strengthen kinship bonds. In Trabzon, the 28th annual Traditional Kayabaşı Karaabdal Highland Festival featured local musical performances and traditional horon dances to preserve plateau culture. In early August, the 27th International Istanbul Büyükçekmece Culture and Art Festival moved to Bakırköy, featuring dance groups from Spain, Mexico, Serbia, and Slovakia. Simultaneously, Kastamonu opened its 36th Taşköprü Garlic Festival, which included the Pompeiopolis Agricultural, Forestry and Food Fair and the announcement of a new digital traceability project for local producers. Later in August, the Karabiga Summer Festival commenced in Çanakkale, featuring musical performances and the inauguration of a new enduro motorcycle track. In Kütahya, the Frigg Women's Production and Business Cooperative hosted an event to showcase handcrafted ceramics, embroidery, and jewelry to support female producers. Recent events in late August have continued this trend of community-focused celebrations. In Malatya, the 11th Traditional Drejan Tribe Festival featured traditional games, cirit shows, and concerts. In Edremit, the 36th Traditional Güre Sarıkız Charity commemorated local legends with religious services and traditional meals.
