Indonesia motorbike theft crackdown continues

Overview

Police operations against organised motorcycle‑theft networks have widened throughout Indonesia. In late May, units in Binjai (North Sumatra) and Serang (Banten) busted a ring that stole bikes from wedding celebrations, seizing T‑shaped keys, key blanks and four stolen Hondas. Armed thefts have risen, with confrontations in East and West Jakarta where suspects brandished pistols while stealing motorcycles, and a similar gun‑armed raid in Depok that forced thieves to flee on three bikes. West Java saw coordinated arrests in Ciamis and Cimahi, netting a suspect who stole a Honda Scoopy and a 13‑person cell that supplied astag keys and special scissors to bypass locks. Jakarta’s Metro Police announced a massive crackdown, detaining 317 suspects and seizing 156 vehicles, including 141 motorcycles, after reviewing 141 reports. Parallel sweeps in North Sumatra’s Padang Lawas seized 31 motorcycles from a fencing yard, while Bekasi police captured three thieves linked to a residence theft. Investigations also uncovered related crimes: a university student in Semarang pawned 40 motorcycles in a fraud scheme; a hoax video of a Denpasar bike theft was debunked; and a telecom‑cable theft ring in South Sulawesi was dismantled alongside a motorbike‑theft cell in South Jakarta. Banten authorities returned 13 recovered motorcycles to owners free of charge, and police in Lampung, Lampung Barat and other provinces continued to apprehend suspects involved in violent motorbike robberies, some using steel rods or wooden blocks. Recent enforcement actions in late July and August 2026 include arrests in Aceh Barat Daya for the theft of a Yamaha NMAX and in Sumenep, East Java, where two men were detained for stealing a Honda Beat Street. In Bangkalan, East Java, two suspects were apprehended for 11 thefts across Bangkalan, Surabaya, and Sidoarjo using T‑shaped keys to bypass ignitions.
