Smart microcar revival in Europe
Entities: Tridion safety cell · Smart #2 · Geely · Mercedes‑Benz · Paris Motor Show
Overview
Smart, now a 50 % Mercedes‑Benz‑Geely joint venture, continues development of its two‑seat electric city car, the Smart #2. After the mid‑June announcement of a 35.7 kWh battery delivering up to 300 km WLTP range, the programme entered worldwide pre‑production testing on 20 July. By late July, camouflaged prototypes were evaluated on public roads and proving grounds in Europe and China, focusing on urban agility, obstacle avoidance, emergency lane‑change manoeuvres, low‑grip wet‑road handling, and durability tests that include curb strikes and deep potholes. NVH validation now spans wind‑tunnel, acoustic‑chamber and temperature‑controlled rig tests, while tire‑compound studies cover rough asphalt, grooved concrete and high‑speed straights.
As of 26 July, the Smart #2 has moved into its final testing phase. Engineers are conducting extensive on‑road and climate trials to confirm handling, ride comfort and body rigidity, and to verify the updated Tridion safety cell against modern crash standards. Fast‑charging performance has been improved, with the battery reaching 80 % from 10 % in roughly 20 minutes. Production is slated for the October 2026 Paris Motor Show, where Smart will also unveil a second model, the #6, as part of its expansion strategy. Series production is planned for 2027, with the focus on premium, ultra‑compact EVs for European city markets and no current U.S. launch plans.
