Greece power outages continue amid maintenance

Overview

The DEHDE rolling maintenance programme, now running well past its original mid‑July 2026 deadline, has kept Greece on a schedule of repeated electricity cuts. After the July 24 orange alert and unplanned faults in central Athens, the utility carried out further maintenance on 29 July, restoring power in several Athens districts. New planned interruptions for the first week of August were announced for Halkidiki and Imathia.

The pattern of scheduled outages began earlier in the year, with a 31 May cut affecting Athens and Thessaloniki, followed by a series of Attica‑wide interruptions on 5‑6 June, 8‑9 June, 13 June, 15 June, 18‑19 June (the latter paired with water supply cuts), and again on 23‑24 June and 25 June. Crete also saw multiple cuts on 10‑11 June, 23‑24 June and 25 June. Wider outages were imposed on 27‑28 June across Attica, Thessaloniki and Kavala, and on 29 June in both Attica and Thessaloniki, causing notable traffic congestion. Further cuts were scheduled for 1 July and 3 July in Attica and Thessaloniki, and for 3 August across numerous Attica streets. Throughout, residents are repeatedly advised to avoid using elevators, disconnect sensitive appliances, treat all cables as live, and plan for temporary loss of electricity.
