Turkey expands free summer youth programmes

Entities: Gül Kadem Maya · Fatma Şahin · World Bank · Mersin Metropolitan Municipality · European Union

Overview

Municipalities across Turkey have continued to broaden free summer offerings for children, adolescents and families. Building on earlier cultural, sporting and scientific activities, late‑July initiatives added a strong skills‑training component. Mersin’s EU‑funded SEECO project operated a Social Entrepreneurship Centre with workshops in IT, fashion‑tech, beauty, gastronomy and barista skills for women and youth, while its municipal centres also ran free exam‑preparation courses covering science, maths, languages, chess and table‑tennis. In Balıkesir, an Environmental Science Academy delivered a five‑week programme of hands‑on water‑cycle experiments and climate‑change lessons for children aged 5‑14. Canik’s Discovery Campus offered a free summer school focused on artificial‑intelligence, cybersecurity, coding, robotics, astronomy and sustainable living, and Şahinbey’s Mimar Sinan Youth Centre provided women’s hand‑craft courses that helped participants generate income.

Parallel cultural and sport programmes persisted nationwide. Gebze hosted a science‑show concert at Eskişihar Castle, Karşıyaka promoted swimming courses at its half‑Olympic pool, and Antalya’s Muratpaşa district gave free tennis lessons to 7‑14‑year‑olds. Konya continued its online women‑only sport‑education programme serving about 3,000 participants, while Gaziantep’s summer schools attracted 65,000 youths across more than 100 sport and skill branches. Smaller towns such as Karabük, Buca and Kütahya organised fairy‑tale evenings, pilates, zumba and religious‑cultural festivals. Together, these coordinated actions underscore Turkey’s sustained, nationwide commitment to accessible cultural, sporting, scientific and vocational activities for youth throughout the summer.
