Indonesia banking reforms, OJK crackdown, and sector trends
Entities: Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) · Agusman · Budi Herawan · Hudiyanto · Financial Services Authority of Indonesia (OJK)
Overview
Regulatory oversight has intensified across Indonesia’s financial system. OJK continues to flag cyber‑threats and AI misuse as top governance risks while issuing new pension‑payout rules that allow lump‑sum or instalment payments. The authority also rolled out POJK No. 6/2026, imposing strict disclosure, certification and content‑blocking requirements on financial and crypto influencers, and announced sanctions on 99 firms for compliance breaches.
The regulator’s crackdown on illegal finance has expanded: Satgas PASTI shut down illegal pawnshops, crypto‑trading outfits and unlicensed crowdfunding platforms, processing over 17,000 complaints and halting dozens of fraudulent schemes. OJK reported 8,380 illegal‑online‑loan complaints and warned against abusive debt‑collector practices.
Banking performance remains mixed. Bank Indonesia’s latest survey projects credit‑portfolio growth at 7.5 % YoY for 2026, below the government’s 8‑11 % target, while third‑party deposits are expected to rise only 6.2 %. The government injected Rp 400 trillion of liquidity to spur credit expansion, and state‑owned banks received a standby Rp 100 trillion buffer.
Major banks posted strong results: Bank Mandiri posted an 18.9 % profit rise; Bank Syariah Indonesia logged a 17.8 % profit jump and funded a free nutrition program; Bank bjb posted a 13.3 % Q1 profit increase and highlighted robust regional‑bank assets. Digital transformation is evident as bank bjb, Bank Jakarta and others collected multiple INFOBANK‑MRI and Infobank‑Isentia awards for service excellence and branding.
OJK’s SLIK upgrade, effective 1 July, will speed credit data for UMKM and the 3‑Million‑House housing scheme. Student‑savings accounts reached 59 million, holding Rp 29 trillion, and foreign‑currency deposits grew 10.9 % YoY, reflecting continued sector resilience amid global uncertainty.
