Brazil expands mobile health units for women's care
Entities: Mara Shelda · Feira de Santana · Instituto Américas Amigas · Simone Reis · Instituto de Saúde e Proteção Social
Overview
Since its launch in March 2024, Brazil’s mobile‑health programme has broadened preventive services nationwide. Federal “Agora Tem Especialistas” raised elective SUS surgeries by 42.9 %, while state initiatives added neuro‑developmental care and animal‑castration services. By July 2026, municipalities such as Três Lagoas, Primavera do Leste, Juazeiro do Norte, Bahia and Votuporanga ran intensive mutirões, mental‑health festivals, women’s‑health caravans and dozens of specialist consultations. The federal rollout deployed 50 mobile units to 37 Rio de Janeiro municipalities, extra units in Mauá, Cabeceiras do Piauí and Ribamar, and equipped five SAMU ambulances as mobile ICUs. Resende’s mobile CT scanner delivered about 1 000 free exams, later extending to nearby towns. Women‑focused “Carreta da Saúde da Mulher” units continued mammograms and cervical‑cancer screenings in Petrópolis and Cambira, while Paraná invested R$472 million in an elderly day‑care centre. Legislative progress saw the Chamber approve a draft National School Health Policy. In mid‑July 2026, a mobile women’s‑health unit in Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, reported 745 procedures for 687 patients since 12 June, serving more than 13 000 people across 11 state units and completing over 31 600 procedures. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited the unit on 17 July, underscoring federal support. The Sesc Amazonas unit in Manaus resumed free Pap‑smear examinations, now scheduled via WhatsApp, aiming for over 2 000 screenings this year, although mammography remains temporarily suspended in the city. These actions sustain the expansion of mobile preventive care throughout Brazil. On 20 July, Manaus relocated three women’s mobile health units to new sites in the North (Rua Lírios das Pedras, Cidade de Deus) and East (Avenida Autaz Mirim, Monte Sião) zones, operating there until 31 July, while units in the West, South and Rural zones remain at their current locations through late July.
