India administrative reshuffles (May‑Aug 2026)

Overview

The wave of senior civil‑service reassignments that began in late May 2026 spread across several states and reached the centre. On 14 July, Assam reassigned senior IAS and ACS officers, while West Bengal transferred 33 IPS officers and Bihar moved 22 State Police Service DSPs to new posts. Rajasthan carried out a night‑time reshuffle of 18 IPS officers on 15 July. On 24 July, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a sweeping IAS reshuffle, naming 13 senior IAS/IDAS officers as Secretaries – Katikithala Srinivas (North‑Eastern Region), Vineet Joshi (Panchayati Raj), Naresh Pal Gangwar (Higher Education), T.K. Anil Kumar (School Education & Literacy) – and upgrading four more to the Secretary rank. The decision also appointed Piyush Goyal as Secretary‑General of the National Human Rights Commission, Archana Varma as head of the Department of Official Language, and D. Thara to the Department of Capital Development, among other senior placements. Earlier in the wave, Tamil Nadu on 29 May carried out a large‑scale IAS reshuffle, moving dozens of senior officers and announcing a ₹2,044 crore crop‑loan waiver for 1.4 million marginal farmers. Punjab followed on 7 June with a major IAS reshuffle assigning senior cadres to new development‑board and secretariat roles. Maharashtra’s 16 June order transferred 12 IAS officers and appointed six of them to the state Lokayukta, while also moving senior IPS officers. Telangana on 29 June reshuffled senior police leadership, appointing N Swetha as Warangal’s first woman commissioner. Uttar Pradesh conducted two significant moves: a night‑time transfer of 182 PCS officers on 12 July and a 20‑IAS officer reshuffle on 10 July, including eight women. Bihar’s police DSP reshuffle on 14 July moved 22 officers across districts and specialised units.
