Power outages in the Balkans persist
Entities: KEDS · Montenegro · Bulgarian electricity distribution company · Pristina · Kosovo
Overview
Maintenance‑driven electricity cuts continued across the Balkans through early August 2026. The previously reported outages in Sarajevo (July 29‑30) and multiple Montenegrin municipalities remained in effect, with the longest interruption in Sarajevo’s Sokolović Kolonija district ending at 15:30 on July 30. Bulgarian utilities carried out scheduled cuts in the Ruse villages on July 29‑30 and in the Varna towns on July 30‑31, citing urgent repairs of distribution infrastructure.
On July 30, Kosovo’s electricity distributor (KEDS) announced planned maintenance that caused temporary interruptions in Pristina, Obiliq, Peja and surrounding villages, with outage windows between 10:00 and 18:00. A further round of mandatory safety works was scheduled for 1 August, affecting the 110/35 kV line serving Prizren and the 110/10 kV line, with outages from 05:00 to 15:00 to replace damaged transmission‑tower columns.
These coordinated shutdowns across Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and now Kosovo illustrate a region‑wide effort to upgrade aging power networks and address equipment failures.
