Turkey export and trade expansion
Overview
Since late May 2026, Turkey’s Ministry of Trade has utilized e-export programmes and AI-driven tools to diversify market access. The “Export to Target Countries” strategy generated $94 billion in exports to 60 designated markets during the first half of 2026, with total trade reaching $233.3 billion.
By August 2026, total exports for the January-August period reached $185 billion, a 4% increase year-on-year. Exports to the European Union rose by 3.6% to approximately $71.8 billion. Germany remains the largest EU market at $13.58 billion, followed by Italy, Spain, and France. Malta recorded the highest percentage growth in the EU, increasing by 107% to $671.6 million. Within the EU trade, the iron and non-ferrous metals sector saw the largest value increase.
Sectoral performance remains robust, led by the automotive industry, which surpassed $27 billion in the first eight months of 2026. While August saw an 11% decline in passenger car exports, exports of goods-carrying motor vehicles and tractors rose by 43% and 45%, respectively. The automotive sector now accounts for 11.9% of total exports.
Expansion is also evident in the Far East, where exports grew 18.6% to $5.736 billion. China is the primary destination in this region, with a 35.1% increase to $2.53 billion. Additionally, the textile and ready-to-wear sectors are projected to reach approximately $17 billion in annual exports. Despite declining exports to Russia due to conflict, industry leaders are focusing on the EU, the United States, and the Middle East.
